10 Things to Know Before Visiting Prague

Visiting Prague for the first time? These 10 tips will save you time, money and stress.
1. The currency is the Czech koruna
Czechia uses the koruna (CZK), not the euro. Some places accept euros, but at a poor rate.
2. Cards work almost everywhere
Contactless payments work in shops, restaurants and on public transport. You'll rarely need cash.
3. Beware of exchange offices
Avoid exchange offices advertising "0% commission" in tourist streets. Always check how much you will actually receive.
4. Arrange your airport transport in advance
A pre-booked transfer with a fixed price is the most reliable way out of the airport, especially after a long flight or at night.
5. Public transport is excellent and cheap
Metro, trams and buses run frequently. Buy and validate your ticket before boarding.
6. Tip around 10%
In restaurants it is customary to leave about 10% if you were happy with the service.
7. Comfortable shoes are a must
The historic centre is full of cobblestones and hills – especially the walk up to Prague Castle.
8. Visit landmarks early in the morning
Charles Bridge and Old Town Square are at their best before 8 am, before the crowds arrive.
9. Tap water is drinkable
Prague's tap water is high quality and safe. A reusable bottle saves money.
10. Emergency numbers
- Emergency: 112
- Ambulance: 155
- Police: 158
